Yamuna revival plan looks to make a splash

The Delhi Government is drawing up a major Yamuna redevelopment plan. As part of the ambitious project, the government is planning monthly Yamuna aartis

According to Delhi's Water Minister Kapil Mishra, the government plans to develop the Yamuna in three-phases in the next one year.

According to the plan, the government will construct a spiritual garden on the Geeta Ghat along the Yamuna River. This was the place where the maha aarti was held last year on the occasion of Bhai Dooj.

Also developing a Nakshatra Garden, based on Hindu mythology, along with the river. Delhi Jal Board's horticulture department is planting trees and shrubs in line with the 27 constellations and nine planets. We also plan to develop a Tulsi Vrindavan here," said Mishra.

Senior officials said the government is expected to spend Rs 25 lakh on the revival plan.

Mishra said this year's aarti would be shifted to Sonia Vihar Ghat and is expected to take place on November 1. "We are expecting about 10,000 people to attend the aarti. We will also host artists from Gujarat and organise a cultural function on the day," said Mishra.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will also unveil a Yamuna riverfront development plan for a 5-km long stretch on November 1.

The development will cover 5-km of the Yamuna's 22-km stretch through Delhi. The government plans to introduce water taxis and boating on the 5-km stretch towards Wazirabad.

"The redevelopment plan includes the creation of wetlands, natural trails, an international standard rowing and canoeing facility, aarti ghat. The departments have been asked to only make use of bamboo and other natural material for construction. Nothing will be made of concrete," said Mishra.

He added that work on the revival plan will be done in three phases and will be completed in about a year-and-a-half. "The first phase will be completed by June next year. An estimated budget of Rs 200 crore has been set aside for the project," said Mishra.
