Coimbatore: CITU submits petition seeking permission to beg from the public to pay vehicle loans in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown.
They said no action has been taken yet despite several petitions to the central and state governments, seeking relief for the drivers. Subsequently, they raised slogans urging eight demands, including vehicle due cancellations at the district collectorate.
They demanded that the government should accept a six-month installment interest rate for all vehicle loans and not collect vehicle insurance premiums until 2021 and to obtain a vehicle certification, they said the quality certificate must be provided with speed control equipment fitted to the vehicle. The government should take immediate steps to stop the activities of police to collect fines based on photos and videos, and provide relief of Rs. 7500 to all drivers from March to May.
They also demanded that taxes should not be collected when vehicles are not operating. They demanded exemption from vehicle permits and driver's licenses until the lockdown is over. They have asked for 10 lakh for drivers who died while driving for emergency services and Rs. 5 lakh for drivers who have been injured. Following this, they sought permission from the district collector to beg from the public to pay all these dues.
