Temple priests wing of the VHP petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector requesting reopening of temples and relief supplies and relief funds to temple priests. The petition was presented to the District Collector on behalf of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad Temple Priests Assembly, led by the District President Jegannathan.
They requested for reopening of temples and permission for devotees to visit the temples.Further they requested that welfare measures must be provided by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department to priests who have registered and not registered with the welfare board.
The petition stated, "there are more than 5,000 temples in Coimbatore district. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown days, prayers and rituals have been conducted per Hindu religious norms. Even though devotees didnot attend prayers at the temples. all rituals were done for the gods, three times a day.
Most of the temple priests live in poverty and are dependent on the revenue of the temple for their livelihood. The closure of temples due to the COVID-19 lockdown has caused them mental agony and the lack of devotees has caused them livelihood issues. Further they have been undergoing various troubles in their families due to their financial constraints. The government can aid them by providing relief supplies and relief funds."
The petition then requested, "the government must permit us to reopen the temples and also permit the entry of devotees for worship. Some of the priests of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department have received welfare assistance. However, a lot of priests not registered with the welfare board also work at the temples and they must be provided with relief assistance too."
