Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association members wore black bands around their mouths and arrived at the Coimbatore District Collectorate to submit a petition for revoking the Central government's proposal of cancellation of free electricity scheme to farmers.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association members wore black bands around their mouths and arrived at the Coimbatore District Collectorate to submit a petition for revoking of the Central government's proposal of cancellation of free electricity scheme to farmers.

The police deployed for security at the District Collectorate, however, permitted them to file the petition only after they removed the black bands.

Speaking about this the Tamil Nadu Farmers' Association President S. Palanisamy said, "False allegations have been made reporting that free electricity is used for drawing water in open areas; these reports electricity must be ignored. Farmers have already been affected by drought and insect attacks. Farmers who provide us with food that we eat must not be put into a difficult situation by cancelling free electricity. The Central government must reconsider this decision to protect the livelihood of the farmers."

"When the TN state assembly meets, resolution must be passed against the Central government's decision to revoke free electricity being provided to farmers", he requested. He also requested, "the Avinashi Athikadavu scheme must be used to provide water to drought-hit ponds and measures must be taken to make provisions for this."
