Coimbatore: The million dollar question that runs through the minds of most of Coimbatoreans is, "are we testing adequately?" The positive cases in Chennai showed a significant upward trend after the testing was intensified.

With no new COVID cases reported in the district for the past three weeks, people here were left flummoxed if the curve has really flattened or the testing is so low.

Clarifying the doubts of the people, District Collector K Rajamani on Saturday revealed that 20,041 tests are being done in the district. "We are testing adequately. All those who present with symptoms and those who we suspect of having exposure to the virus are being subjected to tests. To be more precise, we have tested 986 people on June 5, alone", he added.

"Of the 986 persons, 182 are air travellers, 118 were tested at private labs, 293 at Coimbatore Government College Hospital and remaining 393 were people from various parts of the district", he noted.

"After flight services resumed, 43 travellers have been tested positive of which 25 belong to Delhi and Mumbai. Passengers from other districts who tested positive have been sent to their respective districts for further treatment. As of today, 29 people are being treated at ESI and private hospitals in the city out of which 25 are air travellers who belong to other states while just four of them belong to Coimbatore", the Collector told.

The collector informed four positives in Coimbatore are from Madukkarai, Saibaba Colony and Malumichampatti and one other patient is the woman police officer at Collectorate who travelled from Chennai.

He appealed to the people to be more vigilant, wear masks and maintain social distancing.
