Addressing the media on Saturday, District Collector K Rajamani informed that starting from Monday, those venturing outside without masks and violating social distancing will be dealt with seriously. "Not only are they risking their lives but also the lives of others. People of Coimbatore should not assume that COVID has vanished from the city and they are no more at risk. Self assuming wrong information and being lax can result in an outbreak", the Collector told.
He also said that the doctors treating the patients at the COVID wards in Coimbatore have warned that the condition of those infected with COVID seems to get complicated in recent times. The physicians have noted that some patients are in need of oxygen support and a few more have been categorized as more than moderately affected. "after analysing the reports of the doctors, it is imperative that none should take the infection lightly. Citing low death rate and high recovery rate, many people here have become very careless in following the safety norms. Such attitudes will lead to dangerous implications and will cost us lives", he warned.
"Of the 29 patients being treated at ESI and Private hospitals in Coimbatore, three patients are reportedly under oxygen support and more than half of the remaining patients are experiencing more than moderate symptoms and are under strict monitoring. The rest are reported to have mild symptoms. Keeping in mind the complications that the virus can inflict on us, under no circumstance people should fall prey to carelessness", the Collector reiterated.
"All of us are going through a tough time due to the pandemic. However, it is imperative that everyone follow the guidelines issued by the health department. In the days and weeks ahead, we have to be more vigilant as thousands of people from other states and districts keep travelling to our city. On an average, we are issuing around 2500 passes per day, so taking into account the people travelling to our city by road, air and train on a daily basis, the numbers can drastically change. Hence, flouting norms will lead to alarming increase in COVID cases in the future", the Collector warned.
