Noyyal Rejuvenation Project: A marquee project that spans 158 kms at a cost of ₹230 crores inaugurated in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The Noyyal River rejunvenation project was inaugurated last week by the TN Chief Minister through video conferencing. The dredging project is being done at a cost of Rs.230 crores.

The Noyyal river travels through the four districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and Karur spanning a distance of 158 kilometers. The dredging project was allotted at a cost of Rs.230 crores of which Rs.174 crores will be utilised by Coimbatore district.

The dredging activities began today morning at the Chithirai Chavadi Dam near Alandurai. The operations were inaugurated by the Minister for Municipal Administration S.P. Velumani.

Speaking to the press he said, "TN CM has been undertaking a lot of measures for protecting the water bodies in the state. The enrichment of the Avinashi Athikadavu project that has been on hold for many long years has been opened by the CM.

Following this, the dredging project of the Noyyal river that has not been undertaken for more than a 100 years has begun at at cost of Rs.230 crores. "The government is also monitoring the waste and waste water being discharged into the Noyyal river and appropriate action will be taken", he informed.

While the project is very much an essential task and a welcome move by the government, the party cadres who participated in the event threw caution to the wind by not maintaining COVID-19 social distancing norms, which is deemed by many as a cause of concern.
