IMA recommends private hospitals in Tamil Nadu can charge up to Rs. 23,000 per day for COVID-19 treatment

In an announcement by theTamil Nadu branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), it has been recommended that the private hospitals in Tamil Nadu can charge up to Rs 2.31 lakh for 10 days for treating COVID-19 patients with mild to moderate symptoms and Rs 4.31 lakh for 17 days to treat patients with severe symptoms.

On an average, this amounts to Rs 23,000 per day for mild and moderate cases and Rs 25,353 for severe cases.

Tamil Nadu Indian Medical Association has forwarded a letter to the State Health Secretary Beela Rajesh about the charges following the announcement from the government on regulating charges for COVID-9 treatment in private hospitals.

The charges includes accommodation, equipment and administrative charges, pharmacy, consumables and investigation charges, but not the quarantine charges of the doctors and staff and their food expenses, which would amount to Rs 9,600 per day.

The TN IMA has also requested a meeting with the Health Secretary.

This announcement comes in wake of a slew of complaints raised against private hospitals charging exorbitant rates towards COVID-19 treatment. State health minister C Vijayabaskar has issued a warning in this regard.
