Even as the country battles the coronavirus pandemic, a bit of cheerful news has come with the onset of monsoon. The Southwest monsoon hit Kerala on Monday on its normal date of onset, the IMD said.

Coinciding perfectly with the predictions, this year the Southwest monsoon has rightly hit the Kerala coast on June 1, even as the weather office had earlier said it would be delayed by a few days. As a result, the State received its first showers on Monday.

Per the meterological department warnings for Kerala, "thunderstorm with lightning and wind speed reaching 40 kmph in gusts accompanied by moderate rainfall is very likely to occur in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kasaragod and Kannur."

The monsoons are expected to deliver more rainfall than previously forecast, the weather office said.

Owing to the close proximity with Kerala border, monsoon showers are expected in Coimbatore, especially in Pollachi and Valparai, in a day or two. This augurs well for Coimbatore and weather conditions prevalent in the district point to good showers shortly as well.

Earlier, the Agro-Climate Research Centre at the Coimbatore Tamil Nadu Agricultural University predicted that most parts of Coimbatore district and neighbouring districts including Erode and Tirupur could expect a normal southwest monsoon, this year.

“This year, Coimbatore district is expected to receive around 194mm rainfall compared to the normal 189.8mm, Tirupur 144mm compared to 154mm and Erode is likely to record 221mm rain against the usual 229mm" noted a press statement issued by the TNAU's Agro-Climate Research Centre.
