Coimbatore: Due to the loss of livelihood due to the COVID-19 lockdown, vegetable traders have requested for permission to reopen their shops in the Thyagi Kumaran market. Further they are staging protests today and tomorrow, demanding permission to reopen the shops.

The Thyagi Kumaran market has been functioning since 1930 in the Big Bazar street area. There are 450 shops in the market and the Corporation has permitted only 50 shops to reopen. This has caused the other traders a lot of disappointment. Insisting their demand, the traders in the market have announced a close-down protest today and tomorrow.

Speaking about this the president of Vegetable Traders' Association Rajendran said, "our shops have remained closed for 65 days and we have been suffering due to loss of our livelihood. Our sense of community and togetherness will be lost if only 50 shops are permitted to function. Hence the Corporation should grant permission to reopen all the shops."

He further assured that the guidelines and rules issued by the Corporation will be observed diligently if the shops were permitted to be opened.
