COVID-19: 5 new cases in Coimbatore, 1 in Nilgiris, none in Tirupur; 1162 new cases in TN



Coimbatore: In yet another day of colossal COVID-19 positives, Tamil Nadu registered its highest single-day spike on Monday with 1162 new cases in the last 24 hours. The state's tally now stands at a mammoth 23,495, while the death toll rose to 184 after 11 new demises were reported today.

Of the 1112 cases reported today, 967 are from Chennai taking the Chennai count to 15,770.

After being COVID free for several days, Coimbatore registered 5 positives today. Off the 5 new cases in Coimbatore, all of them are travelers to Coimbatore and one of those tested positive is a probation police officer in the District Collectorate.  The 35-year-old woman police officer, who was posted as a probation officer in the district collectorate, tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. She had travelled to Chennai for a training programme before the lockdown and returned to Coimbatore last week.

The officer resumed duty and decided to get herself tested as her colleague in Chennai tested positive recently. This case is not being added to Coimbatore’s tally of cases, as the official contracted the virus in Chennai.

While 1 positive case has been recorded in the Nilgiris, Tirupur registered a naught again today.

According to the State health bulletin, 5,03,339 samples have been tested. While 23,495 have tested positive, 4,79,208 are negative. Testing of 636 samples are under process. A total of 23,093 samples are repeats.

The number of positive patients who have been discharged after treatment so far is 13,170 making the count of active cases under treatment 10,138.

The general public are advised to adhere to health and travel advisories issued by the state Government. With religiously following the cough etiquette by covering the face using handkerchief/towel while sneezing and/or coughing, the public should also wash their hands frequently with soap and water.
