Cash payment of Rs.86.19 lakhs was made by Minister S.P. Velumani on behalf of AIADMK to the Amma Unvagams in Coimbatore district for the meals provided to the poor and needy during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Coimbatore: Cash payment of Rs.86.19 lakhs was made by Minister S.P. Velumani on behalf of AIADMKto the Amma Unvagams in Coimbatore district for the meals provided to the poor and needy during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Minister for Municipal Administration and RDI S. P. Velumani handed over cash payment of Rs.86.19 to the District Collector K. Rajamani for the Amma Unavagamas in the district, today. The expenses until May 31 for the food provided to the poor and needy amounting to Rs.61.19 lakhs and the projected expenses until the end of the lockdown amounting to Rs.25 lakhs was provided in cash to the Collector at the Coimbatore District Collectorate.
The event was attended by the Tamilnadu Assembly Deputy Chairman Pollachi V. Jayaraman, MLA O.K. Chinnaraj, V.C. Arukutty, Amma, K. Arjunan, Ettimadai A. Shanmugam, Kasthuri Vasu, V.P. Kandasamy and former MP A.K. Selvaraj.
Speaking about this the Minister said, "TN CM has been undertaking various measures to control the spread of COVID-19 in the state. While the measures to control the spread are being done rigorously the measures to keep the people free from hunger and ensuring food security is also given primary importance. Relief supply distribution was done through the MLAs and the poor and needy people were provided with vegetables and groceries. Further, roadside dwellers were provided food packets. Continuous food supply to the needy people was ensured by increasing the number of free meals provided at the Amma Unavagams from two to three times a day, morning, noon and night."
He further lauded the effort of the Amma Unavagams. He said, "rhe Amma Unavagams have done a commendable job in easing the hunger pangs of the needy people. The number of customers being fed by them are increasing steadily. The authorities have therefore been recommended to increase the quantity of food that is prepared at the Amma Unavagams to cater to all those who visit the place. "
Listing the assistance provided to the Amma Unavagams, he said, "12 Amma Unavagams within the Coimbatore Corporation and the 3 Amma Unavagams within the Municipalityhave been provided with utensils worth Rs.2 lakhs. Within the Corporation, 7,96,826 people have benefitted and food worth Rs.41.38 lakhs has been served. All meals are provided with egg. Meals with eggs have been provided to 1,79,958 peoples. The total cost for the meals with eggs amounted to Rs.49.21 lakhs."
"At Pollachi Amma Unavagams 64,014 people have been fed meals three times a day amounting to Rs.3.67 lakhs. The Mettupalayam Amma Unavagams have catered food worth Rs.2.62 lakhs to 37,300 people. ValparaiAmma Unavagams have provided food worth Rs.5.68 lakhs to 85,094 people. A total of Rs.11.98 lakhs was used to cater food to 1,86,408 people, three times a day", he said.
He also informed that no money would be collected from the people who eat at the Amma Unavagams until the end of the lockdown and that all the charges have been borne by the Coimbatore District and Suburban district AIADMK.
