District Forest Officer inspects water arrangements for wild animals in Mettupalayam forest areas

District Forest Officer Venkatesh inspected the Mettupalayam forest areas to inspect the water arrangements in place for wildlife in the area.

Coimbatore: District Forest Officer Venkatesh inspected the Mettupalayam forest areas to inspect the water arrangements in place for wildlife in the area.

The forest areas in the regions of Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Karamadai and Periyanaickenpalayam are home to many wild animals like wild elephants, leopards, deer, bison and many other species.

In the past few weeks, the frequency of wild elephants raiding and damaging the crop in fields around areas such as Thekkampatti, Nellithurai, and Kurumabnur has increased. The forest department attributes this to the lack of sufficient water supply for the wildlife in the forest areas.

Therefore, the forest department decided to create water tanks and collection ponds in these areas, which were inspected by the District Forest Officer. He checked the water level in these facilities. He inspected Pullikuttai and Odanthurai areas under the Mettupalayam forest region and inspected the water levels in the water bodies and the borewells used for supplying water to them.

He further analysed the need for new water bodies in the area. The Forest Officer also insisted the workers to clean the water tanks once a week and to place salt stones to help increase the immunity of the animals.
