Farmers in Mettupalayam concerned about crop damage caused by wildlife

Coimbatore: Farmers in Mettupalayam are concerned by wildlife that damage agricultural crops at night. Wildlife movements are rampant in Mettupalayam as it is town in the foothills.

There has been an increase in wildlife movement over the past few monthsn. Various crops such as banana, coconut, maize and cereal are cultivated in the foothills areas of Thekkampatti, Kallar, Kurumbanur and Nellithurai. Animals such as elephants, bison and wild boars are entering the farmlands at night to feed on the crops.

A lone tusker entered a maize plantation in Kurumbanur area last night. Camping there for several hours, it damaged the crops. Fearless of the forest department personnel who lighted torches to chase it away, the elephant fed on the maize crops and went away only after the department workers burst crackers and blew sirens.

Wild boars often enter farms and damage crops. Last night, a group of them entered the farm of Poovathi in Pattakaranoor village and wreaked damaged to the crops. Worried by the damage caused to crops which they had invested thousands in, farmers have requested the forest department to take appropriate action.
