The general consensus among the public has been that Chennai is witnessing a large number of cases because it’s testing nearly 10000 people on an average everyday. Through thousands of comments in our social media pages, people have expressed their doubts and angst that testing numbers have been kept opaque and that districts other than Chennai are not performing adequate tests per day to claim that the respective districts have freed themselves of the coronavirus scare. Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris have continuously reported no new cases for almost a month now and the only cases that have come through have been airline passengers who have come mostly from Chennai and other destinations in India. Questions were rife among the public that these districts haven’t tested enough and super-spreader clusters like in Chennai might be existing among us but since the testing is not enough, we are unable to identify these cases.
This doubt has been fueled because most cases in Chennai are asymptomatic and Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Tirupur only test cases that have contact history and if they are symptomatic.
The numbers
As per the Health Department, as of May 29, 2020, the ESI Hospital in Coimbatore which has been the epicentre of testing and treatment for COVID-19 in Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Tirupur and also some cases in Erode and Karur districts, has taken a total of 17,548 swab tests. This includes the swab tests of all three districts and few from Erode, Karur districts and repeat tests.
We had earlier reported on May 13, 2020 that Coimbatore District alone had taken a total of 7,843 tests of which 2,960 were from Coimbatore Corporation limits.
As on May 29, 2020, 1718 passengers from various places in India who arrived to Coimbatore by flight have been tested. Of these, 971 passengers belong to Coimbatore and all passengers who have landed in Coimbatore have been testedA total of 2916 people are under home quarantine.
