Coimbatore:With the use of masks and gloves becoming indispensable in the fight against COVID-19, equally important is proper disposal of them. In a move to promote the monumentally important biomedical waste disposal measures, Coimbatore City Corporation has been distributing yellow bags for disposal of biomedical waste.

According to corporation sources, based on Central Pollution Control Board guidelines, corporation sanitary workers were collecting disposed masks and gloves in the containment zones in specially earmarked yellow bags and after disinfection with sodium hydrochloride solution, the waste was handed over to a contracted biomedical waste disposal company.
At present, even though Coimbatore remains free of COVID-19 and all the containment zones have been declared safe, CCMC is taking steps to educate people on safe disposal of masks and gloves. According to a senior Corporation official, "biodegradable yellow bags are distributed to households within the corporation limit.
People collect gloves and masks and other biomedical waste separately in those yellow bags and hand them over to our sanitary workers safely. While collecting the bags the workers will give them one bag in return, free of cost. The people are now very aware about safe disposal of home-generated biomedical waste the failure of which could become an environmental menace."
