919 migrant workers return to their hometowns by train from Mettupalayam

Coimbatore: 919 migrant workers from the Nilgiris district have been sent to their hometowns from Mettupalayam railway station by train today. These migrant workers were working in the Nilgiris district in various industries such as building industry, restaurants and plantation workers.

Due to unemployment following the coronavirus threat, they requested the government to send them back to their hometowns. Subsequently, 919 persons from Jharkhand have been sent by train from Mettupalayam.

Migrant workers were taken to Mettupalayam from Nilgiris by 30 state buses and were provided with food and water and sent by train under the head of District Collector Innocent Divya.



In an interview to the press, the Collector said that there is no one affected with corona infection in the Nilgiris district. She said tourism in Nilgiris has been severely affected by the coronavirus and the people are in serious economic trouble. She also added that tourism will resume only after the government orders.”
