Tirupur: Tirupur District Collector K VijayaKarthikeyan has clarified that the loud sound heard this morning across various parts of Tirupur could most likely be a sonic boom caused by a supersonic aircraft. He has requested the people to refrain from spreading basless rumours and triggering panic.

On Thursday morning at around 10:40 a.m., the residents of Tirupur heard a thunderous boom, triggering panic in the city. People in adjacent Dharapuram, Kundadam, Moolanur and Kangeyam also encountered the mysterious sound, which they feared to be a massive earthquake.

Puzzled by the mysterious din, people wondered what the source of the sound was. Initially, while some predicted it was a sonic boom, others feared a possible earthquake.

It may be recalled that a similar phenomenon occurred in Bengaluru last week. Later, the Defence Ministry clarified that the ‘loud sound’ heard in Bengaluru, which puzzled hundreds of thousands of city dwellers, originated from an IAF test flight involving a supersonic profile. The sound effect caused by such high-speed flights is known as a ‘sonic boom.’
