Noyyal River project to be completed in 24 months: District Collector Rajamani


Coimbatore: District Collector Rajamani said that the Noyyal River project will be completed in 24 months and all the encroachments will be removed.

He also assured that release of sewage into the river will be stopped. CM Edappadi Palanisamy inaugurated the Noyyal River project worth Rs. 230 crores through video conferencing today.

The event was held at the Coimbatore District Collectorate. The project will focus on desilting and cleaning the river that runs 158 kilometres through Coimbatore, Erode, Tirupur and Karur. District Collector Rajamani and officials of Public Works Department participated in the event.

The district collector, who later met with reporters, said the scheme has been launched based on the long-standing demand of farmers. He said, "four districts will be benefit from the project and we plan to implement it within twenty-four months.

Along with 18 dams and 22 check dams, some ones also will be built under this project." He said the project will enable the development of 36,304 acres of cultivable land and be beneficial for various purposes such as groundwater harvesting and agricultural irrigation.

He said 100% encroachments including houses will be completely removed. He added that alternate dwellings will be built for the evacuated and measures will be taken to prevent sewage from entering the river.

He further added that the Corporation of Coimbatore is already working on the treatment of sewage and chemical wastewater. He also said that there is a plan to treat sewage and use it for agricultural purposes and the project will be implemented soon.
