Heavy rains destroy farms in Mettupalayam
Coimbatore: Strong whirlwinds and rain on Wednesday night reportedly destroyed an acre of papaya trees in Mugalampalayam village in Kalampalayam panchayat, the western part of Karamadai.
Strong winds with showers lashed in several areas around Mettupalayam including Karamadai and Sirumugai.

Vellingeriyammal from Mugalampalayam who was mere days away from harvesting the papayas in her 1-acre farm was devastated after the winds uprooted all the trees. She claims that she had spent over Rs. 2 lakhs in nurturing the farm.
Similarly, five thousand banana trees planted in Thekkampatti were also damaged due to the winds. Meanwhile, yet another farm, owned by Rangasamy, a cattle rancher from Mettur area in Kemmarampalayam panchayat, was also totally damaged.
Many farmers in the region have lost acres of banana plants of various varieties including poovan, sevvazhai and nenthran. With heavy winds on the cards in the upcoming days, farmers incurring losses have demanded the district administration to compensate for the lost crops.
