Coimbatore: Condemning the Central government's decision to cancel the free electricity being provided to the farmers, the Congress party staged protests in front of the EB office in Sivananda Colony.
As per the recent announcement by the Central Government, free electricity being provided to farmers hitherto has been cancelled. The Congress party has been staging protests against this move of the Central government all over Tamil Nadu, demanding to revoke the order.
As part of the protests, the Congress State Executive President Mayura Jayakumar led an agitation held in front of the EB office in Sivananda Colony. The protesters raised slogans against the Central Government. They chanted, "farmers protect the people, BPJ hurts the farmers."
Speaking to the press after the event, Mayura Jayakumar said, "the Central government must give up the proposed cancellation of free electricity to the farmers. It is the farmers who are protecting and supporting the country. However the government is trying to hurt them. The Congress will never permit this."
Talking about the protest he said, "due to the lockdown, we allowed very few to protest and social distancing norms were maintained strictly."
Former MLA Kandasamy, Venus Mani and a few other party cadres participated in the event.
