12,000 banana trees damaged by heavy cyclone rains in Karamadai near Mettupalayam: Farmers in distress
Coimbatore: Heavy rains and strong winds were experienced in Karamadai and its surrounding areas near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district last night. More than 12,000 banana trees were damaged due to the heavy winds.
Banana cultivation is spread over thousands of acres in various villages of Tholampalayam panchayat and Kemmarampalayam panchayat near Karamadai. Various varieties of banana have been cultivated here such as Kathalai, Nendran, Poovam and Robusta. In this case, last night it rained heavily along with strong winds.
In this, over 12,000 banana trees in Karamadai west, including Kandiyoor, Tholampalayam, Velliangadu, Kemmarampalayam and Mettur, were damaged by the cyclone.
Banana trees that were grown well by investing about ā¹120 per banana tree were damaged in the winds overnight, causing a loss of several lakh rupees to the farmers. The farmers are in distress due to the heavy loss incurred right before harvest.
