Coimbatore: A four-member gang attacked an OYO inn in Saravanampatti. They barged into the rooms of two couples and stole their jewels, money and cellphones at knife point. The employees of the inn and other guests who attempted to assist the couples were also harmed in the incident.

The OYO Tristar Inn, a lodge operated by Roshini and Sivakumar of Tirupur is in a building owned by Ramesh Shankar at Angammal Garden in Chinna Mettupalayam near Saravanampatti. The inn accepted online bookings by two couples who visited the inn and stayed the night on May 22.

The following day, they vacated the rooms around 12 PM and checked back in at 3 PM. At the time, a gang of four men armed with knives arrived at the inn and broke the CCTV cameras and hard disks. They then proceeded to lock the couples up and attack them. They threatened them with knives and looted their money, phones and jewellery.

The employees at the inn and a few guests there attempted to stop the gang. However, they were also attacked with knives. The miscreants eventually escaped in the car that they came in.

One of the couples escaped from their room, breaking out through the window. The guests informed the Saravanampatti Police who have initiated a formal inquest and are are investigating the case. The injured employees, Daniel, Tamilarasan, Sivakumar and Narasimma Rajan, have been admitted to the Coimbatore GH for treatment.

It is alleged that the gang monitored the arrival of couples to the inn and tried to misbehave with the women, but ended up attacking everyone and looting money and valuables. It is to be noted that while lodges and hotels have not been granted permission to operate yet due to the pandemic crisis, the inn had remained open illegally and the couples had stayed there in violation of pandemic norms.
