Coimbatore: Authorities led by the Coimbatore North Revenue Divisional Officer inspected the Thekkampatti Powerhouse and Nellithurai areas in a bid to close down various points of entry in the Bhavani River toprevent accidental drownings. A number of random entry points to the river have been chosen to be closed.

Excess water from Pillur Dam overflows into the Bhavani river and flows via Thekkampatti and Nellithurai before reaching Bhavani Sagar Dam.People from the districts of Coimbatore, Tirupur and Nilgiris often tour these places and swim and bathe in the the river. A substantial number of the visitors do carry alcohol with them and usually choose rocks and sand mounds in the middle of the river to relax and enjoy. Quite often excess water let out from the Pillur dam floods the river and people in the middle of the river are stuck without a way out as a result of which many drown.

Owing to a number of such fatal accidents, the fire, police department and revenue department officials, who are usually involved in rescue operations, discussed problems regarding these spots and arrived at the decision of closing a number of random entry points.

A team led by the Coimbatore North Revenue Divisional Officer Suresh inspected the points of entry at Thekkampatti Powerhouse and Nellithurai. To their shock, they found many, throwing caution to wind, splashing about and bathing in the middle of the river. The officials warned the visitors and advised them against indulging in such dangerous activities.
