Migrant workers suffer due to inefficient district administration in Coimbatore: CITU.
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in a press release has alleged that the district administration has failed to provide clear-cut information to the migrant workers on their departure to their respective home towns.
The release pointed that many migrant workers are left clueless regarding the procedue and arrangements made by the district administration to send them back home. Lack of proper and timely communication has led to unnecessary chaos and forced the distressed migrant workers walk up and down, to enquire on the procedure of applying to go back to their home towns.
On a daily basis, the sight of migrant workers thronging in large numbers in front of the Tahsildhar office, Village Officer, Police staions, Taluk office, Revenue office, only shows the shortcomings of the district administration in communicating to the migrant workers on the procedure for leaving to their town, allleged the release.
The release stressed that with several thousands of workers stuck here, the district administration should gear up atleast now to keep the migrant workers well-informed and provide definite information including boarding procedures, train timing etc.,
"Henceforth, the district administration must immediately rectify the confusion prevailing in applying online. Awareness must be created to sensitise the migrant workers on how and when they can leave. All those migrant workers who come to the Tahsildhar office or any other government office for help should be provided with food and water. Precise information on the boarding details including train number, departure time should be informed to them, well ahead. The SMS delivered to their phones when applying online should be regarded as the final application and such online applicants must be made to fill another application at the VO's office, in person", the release said.
The release also urged that those migrant workers who have expressed their willingness to stay back should be provided with Rs. 7,500 along with food, as relief assistance.
