Mango waste disposed in Mettupalayam forest area - wildlife at risk of infection
Coimbatore: The disposal of mango waste in Mettupalayam forest area has put the wildlife at risk of infection. Elephants, deer, leopards, monkeys, wolve and a a host of other fauna inhabit the region.
It was found recently that some unidentified men have been dumping mango waste including rotten fruits ripened through chemical processes at the first hairpin bend in Ooty road.
Drought-stricken wildlife including monkeys are seen consuming this waste dumped near the roads. Wildlife enthusiasts opine that the animals are susceptible to diseases because of this.
The waste scattered alongside the road make monkeys constantly scamper putting them at the rampant risk of vehicles hitting them.
Environmental activists have therefore urged the government to initiate action against people who throw waste in the area. When asked about this, the Forest Department said that it is illegal to dump food waste in the woods and also promised action against the culprits.
