Protests were held at over 200 places in the Coimbatore district against the privatisation of public sector undertakings and the proposed increase in working hours by the CPI(M), in support of the trade unions.

Coimbatore: Protests were held at over 200 places in the Coimbatore district against the privatisation of public sector undertakings and the proposed increase in working hours by the CPI(M), in support of the trade unions.

During the protests, various actions of the government were condemned including the proposed increase in the work hours from 8 to 12 hours.

They also noted that, "people are struggling with loss of income and while the prices of commodities keep increasing, loans availed at banks, payments for educational institutions, etc strangle the workers. Migrants all over the nation are in dire straits. The Central Government's keenness in trying to privatise the public sector undertakings in such a critical time has exposed its loyalty to the corporates."

In a move to show their solidarity with the the trade unions, CPI(M) conducted these demonstrations at more than 200 places in Coimbatore District including the unions, taluks, urban councils and branches.

The protest held in front of the CPI (M)'s District Committee Office was led by the party's MP P.R. Natarajan. The party's District Secretary Ramamurthy, former MLA K.C. Ganesan, District, Executive Committee members Jeyabalan, Ajaykumar and many other executives participated in the protest.
