Coimbatore-Tirupur District Power Loom Owners' Association seek waiver of electricity charges

Coimbatore-Tirupur District Power Loom Owners' Association has requested the government to provide relief fund to the power loom owners who have been affected due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore-Tirupur District Power Loom Owners' Association has requested the government to provide relief fund to the power loom owners who have been affected due to the COVID-19 lockdown.

More than two lakh power looms operate in Somanur, Karumathampatti and Thekkalur areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur Districts. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown, these have ceased functioning for more than 50 days.

With loss of business, the power loom owners have been struggling with the lack of income. Additionally, they have the burden of electricity bill payments. The manufactured goods are lying stagnant as they have not been able to send it to the customers. Citing these reasons, the Coimbatore-Tirupur District Power Loom Owners' Association has requested the TN government to provide relief to the power loom owners as it did for the unorganised sector workers.

They also said the micro and small power loom owners of Andhra have been waived off their electricity charges for three months and the TN government must follow suit.
