Protesting against the Central Government's decision to privatise many public sector undertakings, the Trade Unions also demanded the provision of immediate relief to the migrant workers. They also condemned the proposed increase working hours. They hung placards around their necks and raised slogans against the Central Government.
Speaking to the press, former Valparai MLA and Coimbatore District Trade Union's President Arumugam warned, "the Finance Minister has announced the sale of public sector undertakings to private organisations. If this happens, even though the departments would remain with the government, the authority would be shifted to the private sector."
He also put forth other demands to the government and said, "many business owners have proposed the working hours to be increased from eight to 12 hours. The government must not accept this. The government also should guarantee the return of the struggling migrant workers to their home states. They must also be provided with a relief fund of Rs.7,500 immediately. Protests are being undertaken all over the state insisting these demands be met."
He further warned that if the government fails to initiate action on these demands then a nationwide protest would be held by the Trade Unions.
