COVID-19: Gym Owners, Weight Lifting and Boxing Associations petition district collector seeking permission to reopen gymnasiums

Coimbatore: Gym owners, Boxing and weight lifting, on Thursday, submitted a petition to the Coimbatore district Collector requesting permission to reopen gyms.

Coimbatore: Gym owners, Boxing and weight lifting, on Thursday, submitted a petition to the Coimbatore district Collector requesting permission to reopen gyms.

While gyms have remained closed due to Lockdown for the last one and a half months, boxers, bodybuilders and weight lifters preparing for state and national level competitions have been left stranded without training.

With state and national level competitions expected to begin soon after the lockdown, athletes participating in boxing, bodybuilding and weightlifting lack practice as gyms remain closed due to the extension of Lockdown.

The petitioners stated that "due to the nationwide shutdown, the gyms are closed for more than a month and players getting ready to participate part in the national level competitions lost their shot at practicing.

This has affected many bodybuilders and powerlifters as they have gained weight in the lockdown and it's affecting many poor students who are trying to get sports quota seats in colleges.

Since many shops and industries have been permitted to operate with certain conditions, we request the District Collector to permit us to reopen gyms."
