Coimbatore: Towards sustained efforts on various environment conservation and preservation activities and a mission to plant at least one tree for every citizen of the city, Siruthuli, Rotary club of Coimbatore Smart City, and Round Table Spark have embarked on'Hope Vanam,’ a project of planting trees at many places of the city.

This will unleash fresh air on a city that is fast becoming a concrete jungle and losing its lung space. Toward this end, a green lung space is being created within the city limits at Ondipudur. It is proposed that 30,000 trees will be planted in three phases adopting the Miyawaki methodology where a large number of trees can be grown in a limited area to create a green cover within a short span of time.

The project is supported by the Southern Railways who have granted the necessary permission to plant trees in their land that was otherwise covered with thorny bushes.

This mega project is being sponsored by a Good Samaritan Ms Minal Jeswani, USA thru ‘Rotary Club of Coimbatore Smart City’, ‘Spark Round Table 323’ & ‘Home of Hope-USA’ and will be executed by Siruthuli.

The total project outlay is about Rs. One Crore. Around 15 native varieties of plants like punnai, marutham, maghizham, pungan etc., that are very much endemic to the Western Ghats will be planted, avoiding any foreign or alien species so that the native variants are protected and help in restoring the biodiversity of the region.

The inauguration of the project was held today near Ondipudur Bus Depot. Rtn. Manish M Vyas, President – Rotary Club of Smart City and Rtn. MD Aparna Sunku, Secretary – RCC Smart City presided over the event. U.Sridhar, Chairman of Spark Round Table 323, and Ritane Pasricha, Project Convenor of the Table were also in attendance.

The event saw the first step of the work being flagged of with the cleaning of the area of its waste material dumped over the years coupled with construction debris and other material covered with the wild weed of thorny Juliflora plants.

On completion of cleaning and other preparatory works the planting will commence by the first week of June when the weather conditions would be lot more conducive for planting saplings with the onset of South West Monsoon.

The program witnessed a good participation of a numver of Rotarians, Round Tablers and members of Siruthuli.
