Chennai: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown, Daily newspapers have taken a major hit owing to the fact advertisement revenues have come to a near grinding halt. In a bid to set the situation right, a delegation of Newsprint Pulishers met with DMK President MK Stalin and MDMK leader Vaiko on May 19 seeking their support to escalate the issue to the PM.
While an appeal has already been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, MK Stalin extended his support and urged the government to reduce the customs duty on newsprint and settle outstanding advertisement bills besides increasing the advertisements by 100%.
Soon after the meeting, MDMK President Vaiko penned a mail to the PM demanding a waiver of the customs duty on newsprint. “Increase the use of the print medium for government advertisements and announce a complete tax holiday for the next two fiscal periods,” he urged Mr. Modi, as reported in The Hindu.
The delegation comprised Ram, Director, The Hindu Publishing Group, L. Adimoolam, publisher, Dinamalar, and R.M.R. Ramesh, managing director, Kal Publications, (Dinakaran).
