Coimbatore: After government allowed small gold jewellers to operate, gold jewellery manufacturers, on Monday, petitioned the District Collector seeking permission to open big jewelleries in the city.

The petition submitted by Gold Jewellery Manufacturers' Association, Gold Merchants' Association, Coimbatore District Goldsmith Federation and Bengal Goldsmith Association stated there are over 300 small jewelleries and 50 big ones in the city.Over 45,000 workers including 30,000 Tamil goldsmiths are engaged in the business.

"Producing over 200 kg per day, Coimbatore ranks third in manufacturing gold jewels. Since the lockdown was announced, goldsmiths lost their livelihood and are struggling to run their families.

They have been returning to their native places, which may affect production of jewels in future, so we are requesting the Collector to permit big jewelleries in the city to be reopened and provide relief funds to goldsmiths.

Further, the District Administration should provide traders who travel to other districts with E-passes. As gold rates are rising, many investors look to bank on gold, which may result in a hike up to 8000 Rupees," said Muthu Venkatraman, President of Gold Jewellery Manufacturers' Association.
