No New cases in Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris; 536 cases in TN

Coimbatore: With the total number of persons positive COVID-19 cases already breaching the 11,000-mark in Tamil Nadu, the State has recorded 536 cases (490 cases in TN and 36 cases of people returning to TN from other states) as of May 18. Today, the total has increased from 11,224 to 11,760. With three more deaths recorded today, the COVID death toll soared to 81.


Coimbatore: With the total number of persons positive COVID-19 cases already breaching the 11,000-mark in Tamil Nadu, the State has recorded 536 cases (490 cases in TN and 36 cases of people returning to TN from other states) as of May 18. Today, the total has increased from 11,224 to 11,760. With three more deaths recorded today, the COVID death toll soared to 81.

Chennai keeps topping the list as the positives rose in a single day from 477 on Saturday to 639 on Sunday (including 81 people among returnees from other States). Today, 364 cases have been reported in Chennai and a whopping 7,117 positives have been recorded there Chennai till date.

According to the health bulletin, 3,37,841 samples have been taken so far and sent for testing across 39 government and 22 private labs all over Tamil Nadu of which, 11,760 have tested positive and 3,25,546 samples negative. Testing of 535 samples are underway 15,333 samples are repeat samples. Today, 11121 samples were tested.

Till date, 4,406 COVID-19 positive patients have fully recovered and been discharged. On May 18, 234 patients have been discharged across the State. As of today, 7,270 active cases are under treatment.

According to a report in Deccan Chronicle, the first batch of one lakh PCR kits reached here on Sunday. More consignments will arrive over the next nine weeks at the rate of one lakh PCR kits per week, the sources added. This may help Tamil Nadu meet its rising demand for extensive testing for the virus beyond just the symptomatic persons.

Earlier, in the first week of May, Tamil Nadu had ordered 10 lakh more RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) testing kits from South Korea to ramp up the testing process across the State.
