Legendary Surgeon, Dr. K. Shanmugasudaram of Sengalippan Hospital, passes away
Coimbatore: Lauded as the "Father of General Surgery," in the Western Zone, Dr. K. Shanmugasudaram (88), Chairman of Sengaliappan Hospital in Coimbatore, passed away due to age-related ailments, today.
Having trained hundreds of surgeons across the region, Dr. Shanmugasundaram worked as a Honourary Professor in the Coimbatore Medical Hospital in the early 70's. At a time when surgical procedures were in very primitive stages, Dr. Shanmugasundaram's expertise helped perform complicated surgeries including gynecology-related procedures and saved many a life.
He took over as Chairman of Sengaliappan Hospital after the demise of his father-in-law Dr.S.Sengaliappan (1904 - 1965) who also was known for provision of timely and affordable health care to the people of Coimbatore.
Surgeons trained by him have expressed deep shock over his death and opined his demise is a great loss to Coimbatore and the surgical fraternity.
"His regularity, punctuality, dedication, and knowledge can never be matched. He was a true legend in the field of General Surgery, a great teacher to countless General Surgeons and Gynaecologists in and around the western region", recalled Dr. Sanjay Ram.
