Coimbatore: A heavy hurricane raged last night in areas near Mettupalayam causing irreparable damage to 10,000 plantain trees and landed farmers in grief.
Mettupalayam, Karamadai, Sirumugai and surrounding areas experienced heavy winds and rain last night due to which 10,000 plantain trees suffered damage.
A one-and-a-half-acre farm of Ramasamy in the Thimmampalayam Pudur near Karamadai lost 2,000 plantain trees. Two other farmers, Kandasamy and Subbaiyyan, lost 3,500 and 2500 trees in their two-and-a-half-acre and one-acre farms respectively.
Each farmer has lost a few lakhs of rupees that were spent on cultivating the plantain trees.This has caused a great deal of sorrow to them.
