Lone tusker strays into Gudalur urban areas causing fear amid public

The movement of a lone wild elephant in the Gudalur town area yesterday morning caused panic among the residents of the Thottamoola Yezhu Muram residential area.

The Nilgiris: The movement of a lone wild elephant in the Gudalur town area yesterday morning caused panic among the residents of the Thottamoola Yezhu Muram residential area.

The Forest Department workers burst crackers to chase the tusker away at around 7 AM. The scared elephant ran through the residential area, causing fear amid residents, and caused minor damage to the car of a resident, Dinesh.

For the past two years, the elephant has been living with a wound on its back and the forest department workers treated it recently. Following this, the elephant has been roaming around in the wee hours of the morning disrupting the lives of the people of the area. Many people who go out for morning walk have narrowly escaped from the elephant.

Since the elephant has now gotten used to visiting the locality, the residents feel that even though the Forest Department workers burst crackers to chase it away, it would come back again.

In order to avoid any untoward incidents, the residents have requested that the elephant be driven into the deep areas of the forest or the tusker be tranquilized and taken to the Mudumalai Elephant Camp where it can be set free.
