Container truck drivers arrested near Tirupur for illegal transportation of migrant workers
Tirupur: Two container truck drivers from northern states were arrested for attempting to transport 75 migrant workers to their states. The vehicle was seized. In shocking turn of the events, many lorry drivers have been exploiting the helplessness of migrant workers during the lockdown.
Police inspector Thavamani and his team were conducting vehicle inspections at the checkpoint on the Pallakoundampalayam six-way National Highway near Tirupur. While checking a container lorry that was carrying the cars, they found 75 workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh hidden in.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the migrant workers who worked in Kangeyam, Padiyur, Uthukuli and Muthalipalayam were trying to go back to their hometowns in the container lorry as they lost their jobs due to the corona lockdown.
Following this, the police contacted the companies where the migrant workers had previously worked and instructed the owners to take the workers back and shelter them until the lockdown ends.
Uttukkuli police are investigating the arrested lorry driver Moth Varis and his assistant Mogadh, who were involved in this illegal activity and defying defying social distancing.
It is saddening to see such incidents coming to the fore and know that the migrant workers are exploited for money and made to resort to travelling in container lorries like livestock.
