Coimbatore: So far, 7843 people have been tested in Coimbatore district. Close to 3000 patients have been subjected to tests within the Corporation limits of which around 71 patients tested positive. As of May 13, the total positive patients in the district of Coimbatore is 146 out of which just one patient is presently treated at the ESI Hospital - Ramesh, Deputy Director of Health.

In the last nine days, although no new positive cases have been reported in Coimbatore district, people here are worried about the overwhelming positive cases in Chennai, Ariyalur, and Chengalpattu, which have tripled in the last week after more tests were conducted. Officials have clarified that 2952 swab tests have been done in the last nine days and none have been positive.

With just one patient under treatment at the ESI Hospital's COVID ward, 256 patients from Coimbatore, Tirupur and the Nilgiris have recovered and been discharged.

The District Administration under the aegis of Collector K Rajamani and the ESI hospital doctors and team under the guidance of Dean Nirmala have done a commendable job in terms of treating the COVID patients.

At present, the recently tested pregnant woman is the only patient being treated for COVID at the ESI hospital. Notably, there are no cases at any government-authorised private hospitals, in the city.

As the day draws to 6 PM, the State health bulletin literally brings everyone to the edge of their seats to check the number of positive COVID cases in their district. However, the past week has been so comforting for the people of Coimbatore district as no new COVID positive cases were reported. Our neighbouring districts also share the same emotions as no new cases were reported there too. With Tirupur at 114, the Nilgiris which was holding tight at just 9 cases for over 3 weeks reported 4 more new cases recently, bringing the tally to 14.

Nevertheless, mixed understanding revolves around the minds of the people in the city who have expressed concern about the number of tests carried out. With close to 18.5 lakhs population in Coimbatore City limits, and over 30 lakhs in the district, we have so far tested just 7843 people.

"People have to follow social distancing, hand washing, wear masks and maintain healthy standards to get rid of COVID. However, senior citizens and individuals with existing medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, immune diseases and under chemotherapy treatment have to be cautious as the virus can cause additional complications," opined a Doctor. He also added that anybody testing COVID negative today can turn positive the next week, and vice versa, so maintaining personal hygiene at all times will protect us from the novel viral infection.
