Udumalai: The forest officials received information that an elephant was being washed away in the gushing river stream near Kattaiyanset near Vallakundapuram Panchayat. As soon as they received information about this, forest officials from the Udumalai range jumped into action and went to the spot in the river stream where they could save the elephant. They tried hard using various methods like tying a rope and pulling it out, using a JCB to drag the elephant but all of their efforts ended in vain as the gushing water was just too fast for them to do anything. When they finally gave up the attempt and came ashore, one of their colleagues was caught in the river stream and struggling to come up. To help him, two of the forest officers jumped in to save him. All their efforts including throwing in the dhoti of a farmer who was standing near the shore to retrieve their colleague didn’t yield results. Chandru, the forest officer was washed away in the river and his dead body was recovered in a tunnel gate downstream. His body was later recovered and taken for post-mortem after which it was handed over to his family. This tragic incident of losing one of the colleagues in the struggle to save an elephant has stricken the forest guards in sadness.
