Migrant workers from Tirupur take the train to Bihar

More than 1,000 migrant workers are being sent back to Bihar, from Tirupur on a special train, today. This includes more than 40 school students as well.

Tirupur: More than 1,000 migrant workers have been arranged transportation back to Bihar, from Tirupur on a special train, today. This included more than 40 school students as well.

Due to the spread of COVID-19 and the lockdown that was imposed, knitting factories could not function. As a result of this more than one and a half lakh migrant workers from Bihar, Odisha, UP and other North Indian districts who are residing in Tirupur have been taken care of by the knitwear industries and the District Administration. Their food and basic needs were met by the factories, district administration and volunteers.

In spite of their basic needs being met, these workers have been requesting to be sent back to their home states and involved in agitations and protests. On hearing rumours about buses and trains that have begun functioning, these workers paraded to the District Collectorate demanding to be sent back.

District Collector Vijayakarthikeyan therefore requested the workers to not believe in such rumours and said that proper arrangements would be made on behalf of the District Administration. Despite this, in the first phase migrant workers from Bihar have been sent back to their state on train, today.

1,000 workers from various parts of Tirupur district are being sent back today. Of the list of people who opted to go back to their states, more than 1,000 people will be sent back today. The registered people will be brought to the railway station on buses arranged by the District Administration.

Body temperature of the passengers will be checked and food and water will be provided to the passengers who are travelling back.
