Coimbatore: DMK MLA of Singanallur N. Karthik had alleged that consumers who have a drinking water connection are being made to pay an additional deposit of Rs.4,000. The Corporation Commissioner and Special officer J. Sravan Kumar has clarified the issue and has said that no additional deposit is being compelled by the Corporation.

The Corporation Commissioner has said, "In 2009, under the aegis of Mayor Venkatachalam and Deputy Mayor Karthik, a resolution was passed in the Coimbatore Corporation on December 29, 2009. Under the Council resolution no. 173 it was recommended and approved that a deposit of Rs. 5,000 would be collected for houses that have a drinking water connection. On that basis people who had paid a deposit of Rs.1,000 were asked to pay an additional deposit of Rs.4,000, without any compulsion."

He further said, "Until now, the additional deposit of Rs.4,000 is being collected fully or partially under the same resolution. Due to the COVID-19 lockdown all kinds of taxes and deposits to be paid to the Corporation have been postponed until June."

"Hence, the allegations made by the Singanallur MLA N. Karthik are not true and there is no compulsion from the Corporation to pay any kind of deposit", clarified the Corporation Commissioner J. Sravan Kumar.
