Blood donation camp held by Saksham organization on the eve of World Thalassemia Day.

Coimbatore: A blood donation camp was held on behalf of Saksham in Coimbatore on the eve of World Thalassemia. The awareness program was held at the Indian Medical Association building on behalf of the Saksham organization on World Thalassemia Day to raise awareness about the need for more blood for those suffering from this condition.

Following this, 15 people have donated blood today.

The programme urged that the donors should continue to donate blood for those affected with the disease and raise awareness of this hereditary disease among the public.

World Thalassemia Day is being held in observation of a genetic disease that affects millions of children around the world annually. Also, thalassemia causes defects in protein structure, destroying the red blood cells in the body. Thus, children affected by the disease die of anaemia at the age of 2 years.

Patients with thalassemia minor usually do not require individual therapy. However, patients with thalassemia major are offered various treatments, including prolonged blood transfusion and more. Similarly, the affected person needs blood transfusion once in 15 days. More than 62 people, from children to adults, are affected by the disease.

Coordinator Deva Govindraj, Saksham District Chief Prabhu, State Treasurer Ramesh and Youth Wing Organizer Shanmugaraj were among those who attended the event.
