Private hospital nurses protest; allege salary deduction due to COVID

Nurses of a private hospital in 100 feet road here on Friday, staged a protest today alleging salary deduction by the hospital management, citing COVID.

Coimbatore: Nurses of a private hospital in 100 feet road here on Friday, staged a protest today alleging salary deduction by the hospital management, citing COVID.

More than 60 nurses are employed at Preethi Medical Centre at 100 feet road. The nurses allege that the hospital management has provided them only 20- 30 percent of their salaries, citing COVID-19 lockdown.

Over 20 nurses staged a sit-in-protest in front of the hospital today and informed that they were paid only Rs 1,500 to 3,000, as salary.

"In these testing times, we have risked our lives and have worked even without proper protective gear. We have not travelled to our native places and have stayed at the hospital in order to provide treatment. Inspite of the ordeal we have been through, the hospital management has paid us only 20-30 percent. When questioned, we were asked to quit. Our families are totally dependent on our salaries, reduction in salaries has caused us immense pain", the nurses cry foul.

When the hospital was contacted for information, the Chief Doctor, Dr. Dhandapani said, "Due to the lockdown, the patients who visited the hospital were very minimal. As a result of this, the hospital's revenue was hit. Hence, we have not been able to pay the full salary to the nursing staff. Once the situation stabilises, we will pay the full amount to the nurses."
