Tirupur: Hundreds of migrant workers in Tirupur staged an agitation on Friday, demanding arrangements for them to travel back to their home towns.
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown migrant workers have been stranded all over TN. Though the governments are taking measures to send them back to their home states, the migrant workers have been agitating to expedite the process.
Despite the ongoing efforts by the authorities to provide them with essentials and medical care, the migrant workers in Tirupur are hellbent of leaving to their home towns.
Not paying heed to the assurances by the authorities to arrange travel, a group of migrant workers erupted in protest near the Tirupur Railway station, today. They raised slogans demanding to be sent back to their home states. They stated that they were even ready to pay for their transport and shelled out money on the ground.
The police who arrived at the spot, tried to pacify the enraged workers. Later, they were taken to the Government Girls High School and provided with food.
Following this, the Revenue department undertook a census of the workers. Two of the migrant workers were taken to the police station for inciting the protest.
As a result of the protest tense moments prevailed near the Tirupur Railway station.
