Whose essential need is liquor? questions Kamal Haasan

Makkal Needhi Maiam party President Kamal Haasan has raised questions about the reason for the reopening of liquor shops.

Makkal Needhi Maiam party President Kamal Haasan has questioned the need for the reopening of liquor shops.

In a press release he questioned, "When the people are asked to step out for only essential reasons under the lockdown, why did the government decide to reopen liquor shops? Whose essential need is liquor? Or is it the government's need for income from the liqour shops?"

"Or is it the worry about the reduction of sales at the distilleries owned by those parties that ruled and are ruling?", questioned Kamal Haasan.

"The government that is incapable of heeding to the requests to raise the livelihood of those who are left jobless for the past 40 days knows the reason for reopening liquor shops", he charged. Further he said, "The reason might be known to those who make huge profits from the sale of liquor."

"The sale of liquor in the neighbouring states cannot be an answer to this question. Reasons like the speed of testing and how fast the relief supplies of the government reaches the people must be taken into consideration", he said.

Stating that, "This is the very government that promised to prohibit alcohol in the state and won the elections" he further noted, "The person who the government claims to be following politically was the person who closed down 500 liquor shops during her third term as the CM of TN. The present government must remember this and MNM would like to remind this to the government."
