"We don’t want food, send us back to our hometown"- migrant workers protest in Coimbatore

Migrant workers in Coimbatore held an agitation on Tuesday demanding to send them back to their home town.

Coimbatore: Following Tirupur, the migrant workers in Coimbatore held an agitation here on Tuesday demanding to arrange transport to sent them back to their home towns.

More than 1,000 migrant workers stay in Rathinapuri and Sivananda Colony areas in Coimbatore. They work in various jobs as daily labourers at different locations. Due to the lockdown, they have lost their jobs and are clueless on the timeline of resuming work.

In a bid to ensure they stay free from hunger, many voluntary organisations and the City Police are providing three meals a day. In this situation, more than 100 workers who belong to UP and Bihar refused to collect food and demanded to be sent back to their home towns.

"We don't want food, send us back to our states", they called out and protested.

The Police immediately intervened and pacified them. They held discussions with the help of a woman cop who knew Hindi. The workers were informed that the government is carrying out a collective census of the number of people who are travelling back to their home towns from one point to another.

They were assured that after completion of the process, adequate arrangements will be made for travel. Following the talks, the migrant workers called off their protest and collected their food packets.
