Around 300 migrant workers at Pichampalayam, Tirupur district gathered to protest and demanded to make travel arrangements to leave to their hometowns.
Tirupur: More than two lakh migrant workers have been stranded in Tirupur ever since the COVID lockdown came into effect. Out of the 2 lakh workers, 1.5 lakh workers are being provided with food by the District administration and volunteers.
In this situation, the Central government recently announced of allowing migrant workers to travel to their own states.
“Due to lockdown, migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons are stranded at different places. They would be allowed to move,” said Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla in an order issued to all states and union territories.
Following this, the migrant workers in Tirupur began to prepare to leave to theirhome towns, however they are left clueless as no buses or trains are available for transport.
Disappointed by the lack of transport facilities, over 300 migrant workers at Pichampalayam, Tirupur district agitated on Tuesday highlighting their plight. They lamented that they were facing several challenges and hence arrangements must be made for them on priority to travel back to their own States.
They demanded special trains to transport them back to Bihar, Odisha, UP and other places, as they were struggling to pay house rent and also afford food here.
Shortly, the police intervened and pacified them. They assured that after collecting complete list of data, they would be permitted to leave to their home towns. Trusting the explanation, the migrant workers dispersed with hope to leave to their hometowns, soon.
