Coimbatore: Dr Dinakar Rai, Professor of orthopaedics, PSG Hospital has advised people to be cautious when they visit barbershops or Salons.
In a statement released today, the doctor has warned that haircuts at barber shops would pose a risk of being infected by the virus.
“Because of the nature of the job, it will be impossible to maintain adequate social distancing and have zero contact between you and the barber,” he said.
He has opined that it was imperative to take adequate precautions to protect oneself when one visits the barbershop or the beauty parlour.
He also urged people to always go with a prior appointment to avoid spending much time inside the barbershop and insisted that everyone carry a drape sheet to avoid infection as the sheets are mostly reused.
"I urge the barber to sanitise his hand with soap and water or hand sanitiser adequately before he or she touches you. It is advisable he wears a mask and gloves. All the instruments including combs, scissors and trimmers used on you should be well sanitised with sanitisers before and after use,” Dr. Dinakar said.
The instruments may be kept in sterilization chambers when not in use. Avoid using sharp instruments like a razor to avoid cuts. Ask the barber to use trimmers instead. They are much safer. Have a good soap water wash immediately after your hair cut".
Dinakar Rai requested people to avoid visiting barbershops if they have symptoms like cough fever or sore throat.
“Since the virus is easily transmitted, its people's social responsibility to follow certain preventive measures to stay safe and protect ourselves from COVID 19,” he advised.
