Coimbatore: With the impact of COVID-19 rising everyday, the safety of the frontline warriors -- doctors, police, revenue, health, sanitation workers and ambulance drivers have to be taken care by the government, urged MLA N Karthik.
Coimbatore: With the impact of COVID-19 rising everyday, the safety of the frontline warriors -- doctors, police, revenue, health, sanitation workers and ambulance drivers have to be taken care by the government, urged MLA N Karthik.
In a press statement, he has informed that as advised, the doctors and nurses handling COVID-19 patients must wear N95 masks and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). However, there is a complaint that sufficient PPE and N95 masks are not being provided to the doctors and nurses at the Primary Health centers in Coimbatore.
"Minister SP Velumani has spoken about how swift actions have been taken by the Municipal Administration and how advisory meetings are being conducted and appropriate orders being issued to the respective authorities. The Minister has also said the people and the media know how strict COVID-19 protective measures are being undertaken by the government. By saying so, he has only pleased himself", said MLA N. Karthik.
"In reality, even after a month of lockdown, several sanitation workers in Coimbatore have been working without any kind of protective equipment like N95 face masks and hand gloves. They are working in unsafe conditions on a daily basis. Face masks, gloves provided to them are only for namesake. Sanitation workers have been continously requesting for face masks, gloves and protective equipment. Even after some tested positive for COVID-19, the Minister is even unaware of the realtime problems faced by frontline workers", he told in the release.
The MLA pointed out that the current face masks used by the sanitary workers can last only for three hours.
"Sanitation workers report to duty at 5.30 AM, however food is provided only at 11 AM. When all the shops are closed due to the lockdown, the sanitary workers are very much dependent on the food provided by the government", he noted.
"Instead of posing for photos infront of disinfectant machines, the Minister should be thoughtful of the safety and plight of the workers who are involved in such works", he urged.
Questioning the arrest of SimpliCity founder Andrew Sam, MLA N Karthik apprised, "I had released a press statement urging the importance of protecting doctors who are in the frontline in the fight against COVID-19. I had told that if they get infected, the treatment for patients will get affected. I had also demanded the government to be supportive by providing adequate facilities. For publishing this, in his news portal, Andrew Sam, the CEO of the portal has been arrested."
"By doing so, the Coimbatore police have become puppets in the hands of Minister S.P. Velumani. If any injustice of the government is questioned, then even the fourth pillar of democracy can be imprisoned? If prison is the destination for questioning, then is it a dictatorial rule that is happening in Coimbatore?", he questioned.
